For several years I have stressed the need to increase judges' pay -- at least to match the effect of inflation. The disparity between the salaries of federal judges and the legal profession has skyrocketed during that time. Earlier this year, Senator McConnell's staff contacted my office regarding legislation the Senator planned to introduce to lift or ease the ban on honoraria for federal judges. Although my firm belief is that judges' pay should be increased across the board, I responded to Senator McConnell's request by my letter of April 27th. In that letter I indicated that I would support Senator McConnell's efforts because easing the ban on honoraria would at least provide assistance to some judges. I remain committed to pay increases for federal judges.
