The problem was NOT H/W! Turns out you had better have the tables for COREMAP (& SWAPMAP) be the correct sizes, or your performance will go downhill. COREMAP is more important, and should be set to be at least 2*NPROC (otherwise only COREMAP/2 processes will be able to run without swapping, on the average - especially true on systems that don't have their expand() routine fixed).
