Each uux request generates two control files and one data file. There is no "-c" ala uucp(I) which would avoid copying the data file. ucf-cs!whm has also suggested combining the two control files. Those two changes together would permit only one file/disk block per uux invocation by news, in most cases. In the absence of brilliant ideas for solving this problem, I would like to remind y'all of a mundane solution: the splitting of /usr/spool/uucp into three subdirectories. Duke's 11/70 used to collapse at 1000 spooled files, but with subdirectories chugs along fine up to 2500 ("out of inodes"). We currently have 1191 spooled files, which is about average. The subdirectory software is available as "~uucp/uudir.pdp.tar" and "~uucp/uudir.vax.tar" on duke, decvax, and chico.
