Acbosg.543 net.news utzoo!decvax!ucbvax!ARPAVAX:mhtsa!eagle!ihnss!cbosg!dale Fri Dec 18 13:05:29 1981 news groups of "questionable" content Some of you may have been reading the discussion in net.jokes regarding censorship of news, etc., which was triggered my remark questioning jokes of an ethnic nature. The result of the discussion was the creation of a new news group, net.jokes.q, for "questionable" jokes. This, in my mind, seems to skirt the issue of whether such material should be distributed via the net, and stored on individual machines. I personally think that material which cannot be aired over the TV or printed in the NYT should not be stored or distributed via netnews. I think that it is very likely that a minority individual could file a formal complaint regarding such material. Since I have no desire to become part of an EEOC suit against Bell Labs, the machines that I am responsible for (cbosg*) will not accept nor redistribute any news for the newsgroup net.jokes.q or any similar newsgroup in the future. I am sure that many of you out there think that people like myself are legislating what you may read. This is not the case. If you want to read such material, get a login on a machine that accepts it. My primary concern is not to force you to believe what I think is right/wrong/ offensive/inoffensive, but to keep myself and BTL out of Affirmative Action trouble. ----------------------------------------------------------------- gopher://quux.org/ conversion by John Goerzen of http://communication.ucsd.edu/A-News/ This Usenet Oldnews Archive article may be copied and distributed freely, provided: 1.
