Aunc.1571 net.news utzoo!decvax!duke!unc!smb Fri Dec 11 21:19:02 1981 read-only newsgroups (eagle.164 followup) Read-only newsgroups are an excellent idea, for many reasons other than the one Jeff suggested. We might, for example, want to restrict who can submit "systems" items here (that's a local newsgroup that covers about 10 machines in the local area). Similarly, I've heard the need for restricted-read newsgroups, so that a dispersed group of people can carry on a private conversation. I don't think any effort is needed, though, to convert submissions to fa.human-nets to mail commands. If you use the recnews program and Berkeley's delivermail, you can set up aliases for each local newsgroup; that way, mail could replace inews. Among other advantages, that way one gets the benefit of powerful mail composition programs like ucbmail.
