Ansc.105 net.news utzoo!decvax!ucbvax!menlo70!nsc!bill Thu Dec 3 14:19:21 1981 netnews lossage >From bill Thu Dec 3 14:07:49 1981 remote from nsc I object to NOT having a .*rc file for news. People can maintain their resources MUCH better with it then having some random idiotic bitmaps and garbage files secreted somewhere. The news programs can suffer great problems due to that pointless centralism that you suggest, especially when hundreds of people use the facility, and/or where there is no wizard to fix sick or broken files. The .*rc files are easily edited and consume a reasonable amount of space for the service they provide. And if some luser messes up his file because he blew it, he is the only one affected. I also disagree that its a drain on the filesystem. If anything, netnews in the origional form is a drain on the filesystem, with that obscene large directory full of strange file names. With B news , files are stored in a way that I can tell exactly what I have (catagorized into directories per newsgroup and ordered by number of receipt). No huge directory searches or lists. How the hell can you make such claims ?
