While no scheme that doesn't require the user to cite an original article will work perfectly, I'd suggest the following for version B netnews: Sort first on newsgroups (currently implemented). Sort all articles by title, recognizing the following three forms as equal: title Re: (articleid) title Re: title Within such groups, sort by date of submission (this should be included in the header in some form -- getdate() can calculate it given a permutation of the info in the human-readable line). Sort groups by submission date of the first item. Perhaps as an option, if the first item in a group is a reference to an earlier one with (articleid) included, insert that article as well (if it still exists here, of course -- no error if it doesn't). Provide a 'followup' command which would generate a new article with a title of the second form given above.
