Acbosgd.114 net.news utzoo!decvax!duke!chico!harpo!cbosg!cbosgd!mark Sun Oct 4 21:24:55 1981 arpanet forgeries smb makes two good points. One of the problems he brings up (being able to easily recognise the newsgroup) goes away in version B since newsgroups all come out sorted anyway. But even version A always specifies the newsgroup, so I really don't understand the problem. The second comment is much more serious. Having netnews fail to send something on because it thinks that site has already seen it is clearly] the wrong thing to do, but that's a very useful optimization most of the time. One possible solution is for arpanet mailing lists to have two versions of the list - one with the berkeley "post" in it and one without. (Presumably one would reference the other to avoid duplication of list maintenence.) For example, assuming unix-wizards@sri-unix contains sjk@sri-unix,lauren@ucla-security,post-unix-wizards@berkeley it could be changed to: unix-wizards: uwiz-people,post-unix-wizards@berkeley uwiz-people: sjk@sri-unix,lauren@ucla-security that way, people sending contributions wouldn't see a change, but usenet could send articles on to uwiz-people@sri-unix. the post-unix-wizards alias would have to be gimmicked to believe that the mail came via sri-unix - for example, mail from lauren@ucla-security would have to turn into lauren@ucla-security@sri-unix to keep it from getting forwarded back. (Will sri-unix (or warf or whatever) handle this?) I am not particularly comfortable with this scheme, and welcome all comments. What other lists besides unix-wizards are not digestified and thus would be affected?
