The symptoms are these: you type "readnews", read your news, and then exit; you type "readnews" again and get more news. The glitch I've found occurs whenever you have finished a newsgroup, are at the first article of the next newsgroup, and decide to look at the last article of the previous newsgroup again. When you type '-', the newsgroup and article names are reset, but the structure "statbuf" is NOT reset. Consequently, when the procedure "updaterc" is re-executed, the "last" article read has the same number as the last article of the new newsgroup. Consequently, the number in the .newsrc file is garbage, and if the new news group happens to have less items in it than the old news group .... you get the idea. I don't know any quick fixes; if you do, Matt, could you broadcast it? People here are getting pretty tired of seeing the same thing over and over.
