Here is what I think is happening: There exists a bug whereby when one proceeds on to read a new newsgroup, and then types "-" to return to the previous article, readnews correctly restores the previous newsgroup but thinks that the number of articles in the group is the number of articles in the group you were in when you typed "-". It therefore updates the record in the .newsrc file with the wrong number of articles when you leave. For instance, say you have just finished the last article in group A which contains 100 articles. Readnews moves you on to group B which contains 50 articles. You type "-" to move back to the last article in group A. You will find that typing any number higher than 50 won't work now, because readnews has been fooled into thinking that group A contains only 50 articles. When you leave the news, readnews will update the .newsrc file for group A with the last article read -- it thinks this is article 50 when it should really be 100. You will also note that when you re-read the article from group A and move on again, you don't go on to group B again. You won't be shown news from group B unless you leave readnews and come back in. ----------------------------------------------------------------- gopher://quux.org/ conversion by John Goerzen of http://communication.ucsd.edu/A-News/ This Usenet Oldnews Archive article may be copied and distributed freely, provided: 1.
