Aucbarpa.976 net.misc utcsrgv!utzoo!decvax!ucbvax!ARPAVAX:olson Mon Mar 8 14:52:21 1982 usenix, /usr/group, and decvax!aps the following was sent to armando and lou katz earlier today, on the issue of combining /usr/group and usenix next conference. armando enjoyed it. it is lovingly transcribed here as a concession to that worthy's ego. armando stettner makes a good case for keeping usenix and /usr/group distinct. the primary difficulty that i see is the scheduling. the hours in santa monica nearly killed me, and there *still* wasn't enough time for most of the presentations. also, the number of bodies that are invited is a major consideration. where to keep them all? i also agree that usenix should remain primarily technical. not to slight the "real world" people out there, or anything, but software development and research is more than a stone's throw from commercial interests. sales talk bores me. i imagine that hack talk bores salesmen. why can't we just remain kissing cousins, instead of sharing conference time and hotel rooms? power to the programmer! (volts, volts, VOLTS!) mikey ps... lou: the case that armando makes is presented in a letter submitted to net.general. i don't know the number or anything. i forgot to write it down. armando: "lou" is lou katz, usenix president, my ex-prof, and egghead academician extraordinaire. just let me know if you need any usenix strings pulled. tee hee! oh, and one last thing. you really set yourself up, asking the world to comment on your state of sanity. really. i'd have thought you were more careful than that. ----------------------------------------------------------------- gopher://quux.org/ conversion by John Goerzen of http://communication.ucsd.edu/A-News/ This Usenet Oldnews Archive article may be copied and distributed freely, provided: 1.
