We are currently experminenting with a Sytek Localnet 20 system running (urgh!) 2.10 on t-muxes and 2.14 on t-boxes. Our evaluation of this soft- ware to date is that it needs quite a lot of work. All communication systems within the University is within the purview of a group called DCS (Department of Computing Services). My involvement is as sub-administrator for MFCF (Mathematics Faculty Computing Facility). The DCS group have been reluctant in the past to communicate over our machines, but with this in place I expect the network administrator will be interested. DCS also supplies a switched network made up of Gandalf equipment which is getting a little long in the tooth. This is our basic reason for seeking LAN alternatives. 200 pair cables are painful to haul from building to building. We would be interested in other experiences and networking solutions. Please reply in net.lan (of general interest) or mail for specific items. ----------------------------------------------------------------- gopher://quux.org/ conversion by John Goerzen of http://communication.ucsd.edu/A-News/ This Usenet Oldnews Archive article may be copied and distributed freely, provided: 1.
