Aduke.1860 net.general utcsrgv!utzoo!decvax!duke!dbl Tue Mar 9 14:54:20 1982 joint Usenix - /usr/group meeting I agree with Armando(decvax!aps) that a joint /usr/group and Usenix meeting is inadvisable, at least for the Boston meeting. Rooms and meeting space are going to be very limited there anyway, even without the addition of /usr/group. There WAS discussion of this matter at the open board meeting at the Santa Monica conference. This meeting was very lightly attended and had almost no technical types due to a conflict with the 4.1bsd BOF. I don't know whether this was intentional (I doubt it), but it certainly did skew the representation at the board meeting. I attended only because several others in my group were covering the 4.1BOF. No further mention was made of the matter during the conference. I got the feeling that the decision was already pretty much made by the board at that point (they were to meet with and/or talk with the /usr/group board the next day), and that they were looking for a rubber stamp from those at the open board meeting. They certainly got it, since most attending were vendors or vendor reps. For later conferences, I think the idea of a joint meeting might be a nice experiment, especially if, as mcnc!jte suggests, they were to have overlapping sessions of technical talks and vendor presentations. There would be more time for technical presentations this way, and we could avoid those boring (most of them, at least) vendor presentations that the board (and others) have felt it was necessary to provide time for as part of the general conference schedule, attending only those of specific interest to us.
