UNIX is an outgrowth of BTL involvement with the MULTICS project of the 60's. The name is *a treacherous pun on MULTICS* which required some thought to figure out. (Thanks to some of the pioneers of MULTICS and other early computer types -- they taught me how the programmers and such ilk of that era think) The answer (the pun used) is that UNIX is MULTICS without balls. To make it *painfully* obvious UNIX = eunuchs!
