Awivax.1043 net.general utzoo!decvax!wivax!ss Wed Jan 6 14:15:03 1982 not-so-new USENET site I meant to send this out long ago, sorry. Name of site: wivax What the site is all about: Wang Institute of Graduate Studies. We are a non-profit, independent graduate school offering an MSE (Masters in Software Engineering). We have been in existence since 1979, although we are currently finishing our second semester of classes. Name of contact person at site: Sid Shapiro Electronic mail address of contact person: decvax!wivax!ss U.S. Mail address of contact person: Wang Institute Tyng Rd. Tyngsboro, MA 01879 Phone number of contact person: (617)649-9731 Systems with whom news articles are exchanged: decvax ( and everybody else?) (what kind of link, who the neighbor(s) are): a 1200 baud phone link using uucp Willingness (or lack thereof) to connect to new sites that want to join usenet. If you run uucp, tell if new sites can call you, if you will poll them, what your policy is. If on the arpanet, are you willing to forward news on to new sites by establishing an arpanet usenet connection? We connect via uucp. We are willing to have others poll us, as long as our disks don't get crowded. We are probably willing to poll others with the above limitation and the additional one of phone bills. I am being vague, but I can't say much more than that I guess we are willing to try anything until we find we can't do it anymore for any number of reasons. If you want to publish your uucp phone number, login, and password, include that info. I would prefer to do this on an individual basis. If there is anything info that anyone would like, don't hesitate to ask. [Sid] > > >From evans Fri Dec 18 21:17:51 1981 To: ss Subject: phone lines Df03 hasn't been able to make any connect to decvax since Dec 17 midnight. If a connect was made, you'll have new news, but as of Friday night, there wasn't any. I dialed manually and got a tone, then i used the 'cu' program, and never got a connect. Same with uucp - nothing. I was able to do a cu to a local extension, but anything going to the 'outside world' failed, ie. 96499741, etc. I hear that we're getting 18 data lines in the comp. room - do you know when they'll be installed? Is there a publication? > >From ss Mon Dec 21 15:03:34 1981 To: mckeeman Subject: dec mail Cc: ss I just got this in. It may be the best thing available. I just sent our info to a person at berkeley who I thought was compiling a directory. But was not, was compiling a USENET directory which contains different info. But it may be useful anyway. Anyway this is what I have. It is pretty hard to read on a tube, so I have left a hard-copy in your box. (You probably got that first and was wondering what it was.) If Fuchs is at Univ. of North Carolina (if that is UNC on the map) or Duke, then we can probably get to him using the address- decvax!duke[!unc]!fuchs where the !unc is optional if that is where he is at, and if fuchs is his user name. If he is on the main machine. If he is on some other machine, we need to know what machine. We can always try it and see what we get. (I just called the numbers you gave me and I got no one who knew the situation. Anyway here is the info- >From decvax!duke!chico!teklabs!tekmdp!azure!stevenm Mon Dec 14 11:36:32 1981 (azure.300) net.general,fa.unix-wizards: Network Map I have been compiling my own personal netmap for a while, and since no others have come out recently, I decided to publish this. While I am here, I would like to reiterate something I mentioned several months ago: the net is getting too big to map in a pretty visual manner. What we need is a database of the form: site e.g. chico harpo, duke, teklabs, ucbvax, bozo with the neighbor-list ordered in an arbitrary "decreasing throughput" order. I am working on a program that will (given this database, your host name and destination name) provide the "best" path to the other site. If anybody has ideas for a good cost-function for odering the list, let me know. (Note: this does not pretend to be complete, although I would appreciate corrections and additions from anyone.) (P.s: Please excuse the large hole in the upper right corner of the map, but the Tektronix map is considered (sigh) confidential.) In any case, here is my (last) map: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UUCP/USENET Logical Map - June 1, 1981 / mods by S.
