Apurdue.128 net.general utzoo!decvax!pur-ee!purdue!mab Mon Sep 14 10:05:04 1981 rebuilding .nindex files that vanish Our .nindex file mysteriously vanished. I got tired of having to get an old (outdated) copy from backup, figure out which news messages had arrived since the backup was made, resend them locally, and then resend all news which came in while I was patching up the .nindex file. So, I wrote a program called "nifix" which will regenerate the .nindex file by grabbing the headers of the news in the news directory (to get the names and subjects), and then approximating the time each news item was received by the time the file containing the news item was last written or created (this is close, to within a few seconds or so.) It then sorts the list and writes it out. Presto! you've got yourself an up-to-date .nindex file. If anyone wants a copy, mail me a note (purdue!mab) and I'll send you one (via mail), the unformated manual page, and changes to the Makefile. Happy hacking!
