Aunc.1039 net.general,NET.general utzoo!decvax!duke!unc!smb Mon Aug 10 20:14:18 1981 The truth about datamat!rumor The address is not garbled; it must be fraudulent. We talked that one over when we were designing netnews, and decided not to worry until the problem actually arose.... Anyway, an article went out around August 1 that was a keyed-in version of an item that supposedly will appear in Datamation. The address on it really is utzoo!datamat!rumor, I'm afraid -- which could occur in only the following fashion: (a) a superuser at a site that talks to you temporarily genned itself a netnews that believed its site name was "datamat", added a userid named "rumor", and submitted the article; (b) a superuser at your site submitted the article, then reached in to the uucp spool file and changed the header; (c) a superuser at some site somewhere dialed in to decvax and sent them a news file prepared either by mechanism (a) or (b). Plainly, someone did not want to take responsibility for having keyed the thing in -- probably for fear of angering Datamation. ----------------------------------------------------------------- gopher://quux.org/ conversion by John Goerzen of http://communication.ucsd.edu/A-News/ This Usenet Oldnews Archive article may be copied and distributed freely, provided: 1.
