Reading all this news has sparked my interest in what certainly can be considered a trivial subject: How do sites determine what login names to use, and what are the rules regarding the selection of them? For example, here at pur-ee, most login names are simply the person's last name, or their last name and first initial (with ~4000 accounts, there are some exceptions). However, the rules are relatively lax, and if you want something else (davy, for example), all you need do is ask for it. Some places apparently use only initials, accounting for a lot of three letter logins, some places use last names, some use greater than eight characters (U. of Waterloo). So, here's my idea: if you will send me a description of what kinds of logins your site uses/allows, whether this is a strict rule, and perhaps any *reasons* for this policy, I'll summarize and put them on the net.
