From ARPAVAX:arnold Tue Apr 6 10:50:41 1982 Subject: ucbvax!hamachi and realted issues Well, folks, somebody out there has been so kind as to tell me what Gordon Hamachi was doing. Actually, several people have told me, and I thank you all. Maybe I'm wierd, but when I put out a piece of software, I expect people who find bugs to tell me about them, and I'm glad that there are some people out there who agree. Lots of people knew about the rogue bug which I have been exploiting. I myself learned about it from some people here at Berkeley who were doing it. I am the bad guy for letting Ken know that there was a bug; other people who knew about the bug but preferred not to tell him are the heroes because, when threatened with the denial of the latest version of rogue, they finally came forward and confessed. What motivates someone to single-handedly delay the distribution of a popular computer game? From my point of view, I am not the one who delayed distribution, Ken Arnold is the one. There are a number of other bugs which Ken knows about, but will he delay releasing Rogue until he can fix THEM? No. For instance, if you are running VAX Unix there is a nifty program called gcore which looks in /dev/kmem and generates a snapshot core dump of a running process. If you are willing to do a little work, you can write a program (as I have) which will read and format that dump in order to show you the identities of potions, scrolls, rings, and wands. You can also get a full map of the current level, plus the locations of all monsters, gold, magic, etc. on the current level. I have told Ken about this bug, but he says that it is too much trouble for him to fix. Look, I don't like being threatened. When Ken Arnold or anybody else threatens me by promising to unleash upon me the combined wrath of hundreds of dedicated rogue junkies, I don't knuckle under, I get stubborn and resentful. It is generally poor tactics to persuade someone by beating them with a stick. Or were you all police officers during the sixties?
