The most important requisite for getting down the levels seems to be hit point maximum. If you are not getting 9 or 10 increments at each early experience level, you might as well quit. As soon as wraiths show up, take them on. You more often gain net experience than lose it when you beat up on a wraith. 2. The second most important requisite is good armor. Get it down to 0 or below if at all possible. As others have suggested, if you have to, get through Rust Monster territory (levels 9-18) with no armor to save your good stuff. Actually, I usually wear some junk that is rusted out to level 9 through about level 15 and then start upgrading from the armor I've found to get through levels 16-18. 3. Third on the list is weapon strength. Enchant that mace! 4. Only fourth is strength. I was never over strength 16 in the total win; an ant got me and there was never a Restore Strength. 5. Watch out for those umber hulks. Confusing them sometimes works. Best is to get down to level 26 as fast as possible after passing 18 or so. 6. You can beat up nymphs easily by standing off and throwing things at them. It seems that they always have something in their packs so it is worth killing them. 7. On the way back up, you won't find any more magic or gold (except for magic that dead monsters drop), so if you need something you are going to have to look deeper than the maximum level you have reached. 8. I usually try out the wands on innocent little creatures like gnomes. 9. When you get back out, you will be paid for all the stuff you are carrying so that your total includes gold you found and the value of your equipment. However, armor with negative values is deducted from your gold count with fairly heavy cost. So take off and drop any damaged armor just before you go up those last stairs. 10. When you are coming back up, be careful of trap doors. There are more traps the higher the level number and it is a pain to try to find your way back up just after you searched all nine rooms of the lower level to find the stairs. Good luck.
