Karpov, laden with bouquets of red and pink roses, was shown on the national prime-time evening news show ''Bremya'' arriving at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport from Merano, Italy, where he beat Korchnoi 6-2. ''We are very happy that we brought back victory to Moscow, to the Soviet Union,'' said Karpov, 30. ''We worked hard. It was not simple.'' Soviet coverage of Karpov's return made no mention of Korchnoi, who defected from the Soviet Union in 1976. The challenger said he was under intense psychological pressure during the match because of the continuing refusal of Soviet authorities to allow his wife Bella and imprisoned son Igor to join him in the West. ap-ny-11-29 2237EST ********** Comment by the opinionated Jude Acers from an article written in 1976: "Karpov is going to be around a half century from now. He's going to be the strongest player that ever lived, before his career is through. He's already able to beat every player in the world of the older generation. Only new players with respect for Karpov will have a chance to handle him." Personally, I find Karpov's style boring. Admittedly, this Capablancian-Karpovian style is probably best for consistently beating the world's best. I prefer the games of the early Tal, Krejcik, and Diemer. ----------------------------------------------------------------- gopher://quux.org/ conversion by John Goerzen of http://communication.ucsd.edu/A-News/ This Usenet Oldnews Archive article may be copied and distributed freely, provided: 1.
