Look at Xerox-PARC and the Alto system: I don't think that they concerned themselves with market acceptance when they first designed the Alto. Their experiences have brought them to the forefront of the personal workstation and office automation marketplaces. Ok, I accept "Star" as the current SOTA. I now want to know what lies beyond.
