Another general Unix tenet is that one can develop a prototype in Shell and convert to C relatively painlessly*. If one has to figure out how deeply to nest quotes to make the Shell happy and cause things to have the desired interpretation, it would seem that the user is being forced to take some VERY implementation-dependent information into account...
