Aucbvax.3179 fa.unix-wizards utzoo!decvax!ucbvax!unix-wizards Wed Sep 16 17:29:33 1981 >From RAM1@MIT-MC Wed Sep 16 17:02:27 1981 I have added a fujitsuu winchester to my 11/34 system and am contemplating several configurations to use my two RL01's as well. The fuji significantly outperforms the cretinous RL's and my question comes down to: how do I decide between these (or other?) configurations: 1. swap and/or /tmp on one RL spindle root and user on Fuji. 2. Everything on Fujii with usual partitions to favor active files. I have 256kB of memory and an Able Cache and expect to run out of CPU before memory, as I will keep below about 10 users possibly until I try V7. My users spend most of their time in ed, emacs, cc and as with ed predominating overwhelmingly. I believe I understand the arguments in favor of the two arrangments and similar ones, but what I don't know is how should I measure performance differences aside from subjective responsiveness. Would systematic use of our (standard?) mips program, which times a loop, be sufficient? If there is no subjective difference detected should i choose arbitrarily? Since I intend to put up 2.8bsd at the end of this semester, I have no overhwelming desire to start adding kernel instrumentation, using enhanced schedulers, etc. --bob morris ----------------------------------------------------------------- gopher://quux.org/ conversion by John Goerzen of http://communication.ucsd.edu/A-News/ This Usenet Oldnews Archive article may be copied and distributed freely, provided: 1.
