They stole the group permission bits in file modes for the locking status, and could do the whole gamut. I never installed the code because I didn't consider it enough of a problem on our system. It looked rather large, but since they had kernel overlays, it was no real problem. All the code is on the conference distribution from Toronto. I believe they have a newer tape, too, but I am not sure. By the way, they also implemented real in kernel quotas, for everything from disk limits to line printer lines to connect time and CPU seconds. Also rather large, but effective, I guess. Used a new structure in the kernel that was updated by all the drivers and other routines, not unlike inode and u tables.
