"Can't turn off ^S ^Q when you add a printer port to a VT100/VT132: This one pains me also; in order to run EMACS with my printer port I must run at 4800 baud and have redefined ^S & ^Q to other keys (ugly, ugly, ugly). The reason for this is because the printer port was added on after the base machine was released; although hooks for the port were designed into the base machine it is obvious someone didn't think through all the synchronization problems and the only way to solve them was the use of the external XON/XOFF protocol." "Slowness of Insert/Delete line: This one is a real surprize to me, I don't understand why it should be. The VT100 hardware maintains it's screen refresh memory as a linked list of lines; adding or deleting a line just requires a relink of two pointers which should certainly be fast. The line need not be blank filled either since the hardware recognizes a special end-of-line character which inhibits active video generation. I'll ask around next time I see the terminal microcode group and see if I can understand why this is so slow - it sure isn't the underlying hardware!!" "Is the VT101/102 faster on line insert/delete?: I don't know. The VT102 has a fully integrated terminal controler so it might solve some of the problems mentioned in item 1 above; since I don't understand why the line insert/ delete is so slow I can't even guess if it's better in the 101/102." "Some more response to the first mail I read: In numbers their are now over 250,000 DEC built VT100's in the field" ======== ------- ----------------------------------------------------------------- gopher://quux.org/ conversion by John Goerzen of http://communication.ucsd.edu/A-News/ This Usenet Oldnews Archive article may be copied and distributed freely, provided: 1.
