It's fair to say that many tradeoffs made in the VT100 were in favor of hardware simplicity, as in 1977 when it was designed that was still a large economic factor. The insert/delete line & character was a major ommission; the new cost reduced VT100's (i.e. VT101 and VT102) have added this feature.
