Aucbvax.4919 fa.editor-p utzoo!decvax!ucbvax!editor-people Mon Nov 2 15:33:51 1981 EDITOR-PEOPLE now a digest >From Admin.JQJ@SU-SCORE Mon Nov 2 15:23:42 1981 I had been trying to avoid this change, but EDITOR-PEOPLE is now a digest (of sorts). The huge volume of mail to the list in the last few days has prompted many people to withdraw from the list with comments like "too many opinons, too little substance", or "my mail file looks like the top of my desk--cluttered with junk". I plan to remail as sent almost all messages sent to EDITOR-PEOPLE@SU-SCORE, possibly batching several into one message. I plan to filter out only a few kinds of messages: o Very long messages, particularly those not directly relevant to discussion of editors. In most cases I will store the actual message in the archive, and will include a pointer to it in the mail that I send to the distribution list. Note that if I am sent a draft of an article on the psychology of editing I will publish it irrespective of length. o Messages of administrative interest only, e.g. requests to be added/removed from the list sent to EDITOR-PEOPLE rather than the proper destination, EDITOR-PEOPLE-REQUEST. o Messages which are clearly inappropriate to the discussion of editors. If I decide that a discussion is getting off the subject, I will ask the sender if he/she is really sure that the message should be sent to the whole mailing list before I remail it. One effect of this change should be noted: mail sent via EDITOR-PEOPLE will now be delayed until I see it, typically at least 1 day, and possibly as much as 3 or 4 if I am out of town or otherwise unavailable. My vision of the EDITOR-PEOPLE mailing list is of something much more scholarly than the debating society it has recently become. Even though I emphatically do not intend to play the role of censor, as moderator I WOULD like to plead that you try to think before you write. Use this list as a forum for publication of new results on editing, for requests for information about editors, documentation, and research, or for serious discussion of text editors, not as a place to air unsupported personal opinions. ------- ----------------------------------------------------------------- gopher://quux.org/ conversion by John Goerzen of http://communication.ucsd.edu/A-News/ This Usenet Oldnews Archive article may be copied and distributed freely, provided: 1.
