It's implementation was prompted by Multics Emacs. One of the advantages of the Unix implementation over the Multics one is the ability to have multiple processes under the same Emacs. I typically run with lisp in one window, a shell [the command interpreter] in another, a file being edited in another, and a continuously updating SYSTAT in the mode line.
