Your analysis of what you did and its justifications and reprecussions certainly makes sense to me. However, I'm not sure that the LISP machine really embodies all the virtues you suggest (possibly this is due to my lack of experience with it). I think that some of the problems I'm worried about aren't faced in the LISP machine because it assumes a rather monolithic user community, one that will be happy to use the same editing conventions and programming language. I think in UNIX, we can't make these assumptions.
