At the very least, you don't need a contemptuous attitude to make use of what he is saying, which is that militaristic posturing has less to do with preserving the motherland (or mother-tribe) than with instinctual primate behavior. Certainly one can support soldiers when their work becomes necessary and also believe that their work becomes necessary largely because of the behavior patterns Lorenz notes. Think about it: If self-preservation is really the reason for the arms race, then why are we scared? I don't feel that it's preserving my safety...
