The upgrades are complete. gopher.floodgap.com has been transferred from stockholm, the reliable old but long-in-the-tooth Apple Network Server 200MHz 604e, to helsinki, a Power Mac 7300 with a 500MHz G3, 512MB RAM, 40GB of disk and running NetBSD/macppc. In addition, Veronica-2's total rewrite is complete also. This new database is entirely MySQL based and best of all is self-healing, meaning there will be no more need for lengthy intervals to recreate new indexes; all robot information is added live in real time to V-2 and immediately available for search. Moreover, dead servers are more rapidly identified and pruned. Queries and database performance have been tuned up over several weeks and the performance is much better than stockholm, with much better reliability and relevancy results to boot. As DNS updates (all the backup DNSes for floodgap.com are also synced), people will be transferred to helsinki. Once stockholm is no longer receiving requests, its gopher server will be decommissioned, and the gopher proxy will also be moved to helsinki. stockholm will still handle primary DNS, web and E-mail services. I hope people enjoy the faster server and better system. Already this new V-2 is approaching 1 million selectors, again, and I predict it will exceed its predecessor in just a couple of weeks as its indexing speed has also been significantly increased. Please notify me ASAP with problems. -- ---------------------------------- personal: http://www.armory.com/~spectre/ -- Cameron Kaiser, Floodgap Systems Ltd * So.
